Mold Inspection Identifies Health Risks

Mold is a fungal growth in the same family as yeast and mushrooms. Some mold is helpful such as that used for making penicillin. However, mold spores growing on the structure or the furnishings of a home can cause serious health problems. It is a particular concern for children; pregnant women and the elderly, for people with existing respiratory conditions like asthma, and for those with weakened immune systems. Over time, even healthy individuals can become sensitized. Because mold grows quickly, any suspected problem in a home requires an immediate mold inspection.

Need for Mold Inspection

A trained investigator is needed to tell if there is a mold problem in a dwelling. A first step is to determine if there has been a history of flooding, or if there have been roof or plumbing leaks. There may be visible signs of mold, or a musty odor. The extent of any mold has to be determined, because the larger the area, the greater the concentration of this harmful fungus in the indoor air. This will determine the health risk, what has to be done to correct the problem, and what steps need to be taken to protect the occupants. In some situations the inspector may collect indoor air samples or even sample the mold itself for testing.

The Inspection Report

The report from a reputable mold inspection service will provide details on the extent of the problem, probable causes, and recommended next steps to resolve the existing condition. A qualified inspector can also make suggestions about preventative measures. The homeowner then knows what to do to maintain a healthy environment for his family.
